The technology exists so that you should be able to enter lambing records from the field via cell phone SMS text messages. If you think about it, Facebook, Myspace, Blogger, Twitter, all the dating service sites, most e-retail sites, etc., are all just tarted-up database applications, which is all that we need for sheep record keeping. For years I have been wondering if there isn't some way to put something like Ewebyte (which I like what I have seen of) on-line to make it platform- and location-independent.
![]() Flockfiler Full Time OnI can view, enter and delete information in real time via a web app phone such as a iPhone or gPhone in the field. I only get to work on this project in part of my spare time as I have other obligations that prevent me from going full time on the project at the moment. The system works well for me. It can run on DB2 or Oracle and MySql back ends as well, but I have not completely ported the back end for those DBs. It makes planning and forecasting much easier to have everything tied together for me.This is a J2EE web based system that currently runs on a Tomcat App server with a Postgres back end. It might work for your needs and it is free.I took the schema from CRC and hacked it adding a few things that I had a interest in tracking and making it work with the rest of our ERP.At that point I began writing a app that fits into our ERP which shares information with all of our other apps (Financials, CRM, Warehousing, Distribution, etc.) so now I have one tool that gives me a complete picture of the business with all relative market feeds.I think for some folks the current software products for sheep keeping are fine. The newer machines are much faster and have the capacity for higher ram than 2 gigs. While it is possible to run everything on one PC it would be slow on most PC's or Macs. All of the apps in our mother ship consume a fair amount computer resources when they are accessing data.
